About Edward Steichen (1879—1973)
A giant of photography, Steichen pioneered world recognition of photography as art. He began with landscapes, autochrome and flower portraits. During both World Wars, Steichen directed aerial photography for the US Army and Navy. As Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, his 1955 exhibition, "The Family of Man," opened the world's eyes to the power of photography.
Steichen’s advertising work made everyday things new. His portraits and architectural photographs are enduring masterworks. Modern photography would not be what it is today without Edward Steichen.
